How Much RAM Does Your Minecraft Server Need?

The amount of RAM your Minecraft server requires depends on its purpose, configuration, and the number of players and plugins/mods it supports. RAM, or memory, determines how many tasks the server can handle simultaneously.

Allocating insufficient RAM will lead to performance issues, so understanding what affects RAM usage and how much is necessary is crucial for optimal server performance.

As a general rule:

  • More players and addons (mods/plugins) require more RAM.
  • Different server types have varying RAM requirements.

Recommended RAM by Server Type

Vanilla / Spigot / Paper Servers

Vanilla servers typically require less RAM than other types but are affected by variables such as player count and plugins.

Configuration Recommended RAM
Minecraft 1.16.5 and earlier 2 GB
Minecraft 1.17+ 3 GB
Additional 5 players +1 GB
Additional 10 plugins +1 GB

BungeeCord Servers

BungeeCord servers have minimal RAM requirements but may require more depending on the number of plugins used.

Number of BungeeCord Plugins

0-5 Plugins

 Recommended RAM

1 GB

6-15 Plugins 2 GB
16+ Plugins 3 GB

Forge / Fabric (Modded Servers)

Modded Minecraft servers significantly increase RAM usage, influenced by the Minecraft version, the number of mods, players, and world progression.

Configuration

Minecraft 1.12.2 and earlier modpacks

Recommended RAM

4 GB

Minecraft 1.13–1.16.5 modpacks 5 GB
Minecraft 1.17+ modpacks 6 GB

Note: Many modpacks provide specific RAM recommendations on their official pages. Always check these for precise requirements.

Bedrock Edition / Pocket Edition (MCPE)

For Bedrock servers, the Vanilla/Spigot/Paper recommendations generally apply. However, Bedrock servers may support slightly more players per GB of RAM.
